T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that the new South Runway at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport (FLL) opened for operations on September 18, 2014 — on schedule and within budget. The $791 million project was constructed in several individual work packages, including Site Preparation, Structures, and Paving, Lighting and Signage. As part of the Program Management Office (PMO) for the FLL’s New South Runway and Terminal 4 Expansion Program, TYLI was responsible for oversight and coordination of the various design and construction firms involved in the runway project.

Construction of the new 8,000-foot-long by 150-foot-wide Portland Cement Concrete (PCC) runway began in January 2012, and required over eight million cubic yards of fill material to be imported and placed in order to accommodate a 65-foot elevation difference along the runway length. The project also included a runway bridge structure necessary for allowing the crossing of aircraft over U.S. Highway 1 and an active Florida East Coast (FEC) Railroad right-of-way. Due to the geometric configuration of the runway bridge, life safety requirements typical of vehicular tunnels were required by the authority with jurisdiction.

The grand opening of the new South Runway was commemorated by an inaugural flight operated by JetBlue Airlines and benefiting the United Way. Dignitaries at the opening ceremony included U.S. Department of Transportation Secretary Anthony Foxx, Florida Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Broward County Mayor Barbara Sharief, Broward County Administrator Bertha Henry, and Director of Aviation Kent George.

“T.Y. Lin International is proud to have played a pivotal role in overseeing the design and construction of the new South Runway for one of the nation’s fastest-growing airports,” said Richard A. Waters, P.E., TYLI Vice President and Director of the firm’s Aviation Line of Business. “This project is yet another demonstration of our staff’s extensive expertise in managing the planning, design and construction of complex aviation infrastructure projects.”
