COMPLETION: 2006
CONSTRUCTION COST: $531 million

Description:
T.Y. Lin International, in a joint venture with HDR Construction Control Corporation, is providing design review, construction engineering and field inspection services for the new high-level, cable-stayed bridge across the Cooper River. T.Y. Lin International also participated in the SCDOT design review of the explosives threat to the new bridge. The new Cooper River Bridge will link the town of Mount Pleasant to downtown Charleston, ultimately replacing the existing Grace Memorial and Silas N. Pearman bridges. Upon completion in 2006, the bridge will be the longest cable-stayed span in North America.

Project Highlights:

  • The new Cooper River Bridge is 2.5 miles in total length and includes two major high-level interchanges on each end of the bridge
  • The cable-stayed crossing will carry eight lanes of traffic—four in each direction—and will also feature a pedestrian walkway/bikeway
  • The main span is 1,546 feet long and will provide a 1,000-foot navigational channel with a minimum vertical clearance of 186 feet above the Cooper River
  • The new channel will accommodate fully loaded freighter and container ships with a DWT of 54,000 tons, allowing for much-improved shipping in Charleston Harbor
  • Each 574-foot tall, diamond-shaped concrete tower will be protected from ship collision by an innovative rock island surrounding the base of the tower
