Historic Canal Preservation and Combined Sewer Overflow Control
TYLin led the award-winning and economic boosting riverfront redevelopment and combined sewer overflow control program.
The City of Richmond experienced a riverfront renaissance resulting from the highly successful program for combining solutions for water quality improvement needs with riverfront development. This project, addressing wastewater and stormwater management needs, incorporated the reconstruction of some of the City’s historic canals.
Working closely with the City, TYLin was able to facilitate gaining approvals from the stakeholders, regulatory agencies and other stakeholders like the Richmond Metropolitan Authority, owner of the downtown expressway.
This project achieved water quality improvement goals for Richmond’s canals and the James River as well as boosted the City’s economic development with valued new public spaces, recreational and educational opportunities, historic and cultural enhancement and economic development with the restoration of an urban waterfront. The program comprised multiple projects including complex hydraulic structures, large interceptor sewers, storage facilities, deep tunnels, pumping stations and work at the wastewater treatment plant. Intercepting sewers and tunnels were installed in environmentally sensitive areas along the north and south sides of the James River.
