MSK Lab Medicine Building
TYLin provided structural engineering services for the new Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK) Laboratory Medicine Building in New York, New York.
The six-story, low-rise laboratory medicine building has three additional stories below grade. The steel-framed structure with concrete on metal deck slab utilizes a combination of braced frames and moment frames for the lateral system.
The design team used cellular beams for a significant amount of the framing. This allowed the framing to accommodate mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems and provide the owner with the desired ceiling heights while meeting the required vibration criteria for laboratory usage.
Project Highlights:
- The building has a LEED Gold certification goal.
- The state-of-the-art facility accommodates laboratory services such as specialized testing in hematology, clinical chemistry, microbiology and infectious diseases, and flow cytometry.
- A full-service blood bank and stem cell therapy laboratory are used to prepare blood and cell products for transfusion at the point of care.
