T.Y. Lin International Group (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that the Hledan Flyover has won the 2014 Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award from the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations (AFEO). The ASEAN Outstanding Engineering Achievement Award is given to an organization or persons responsible for an outstanding engineering project in the ASEAN region.

“The Hledan Flyover was T.Y. Lin International’s first project in the country of Myanmar, an engineering challenge delivered according to a very ambitious programme,” said Lim Kuan Pow, TYLI Singapore’s Head of Bridges and Special Structures. “We thoroughly enjoyed working on it, and indeed are delighted to have our efforts rewarded with this prestigious award from the ASEAN Federation of Engineering Organisations.”

TYLI provided design and seismic analysis services for the new, four-lane elevated flyover, working with design-and-build contractor, Shwe Taung Development Company. The project was completed in just 12 months to minimize disruption to existing traffic during bridge construction. Built to alleviate severe traffic congestion in the busy, fast-growing city of Yangon, the Hledan Flyover, which runs along Pyay Road, has a total length of close to 1640 feet and crosses Hledan Junction, a major, five-arm intersection located in the heart of the city. Because the flyover serves as a vital part of the city’s landscape, the visual aesthetics of the structure constituted a top priority for TYLI design engineers.

The Hledan Flyover is a composite steel girder bridge with a typical span length of 98 feet. The main span across Hledan Junction measures 131 feet long and is divided into 14 spans, with seven steel girders in each span. The deck width is 15.5 feet, with dual carriageways carrying two lanes of traffic in each direction. TYLI’s seismic engineering design called for lead rubber bearings to be incorporated in order to improve the damping performance of the structure during seismic activities.
