TYLin is providing technical leadership and subject matter expertise to assist the City of Gardena procure a robust intelligent transportation system (ITS).

TYLin serves as the technical Subject Matter Expert (SME) for GTrans, the public transportation system of the City of Gardena, California, as it works toward the procurement of a robust ITS system to be installed on 58 buses and four supervisor vehicles. The ITS includes a Computer-Aided Dispatch/Automatic Vehicle Location (CAD/AVL) system, real-time passenger information system, and on-bus hardware for Transit Signal Priority. The CAD/AVL system is a sophisticated transportation management system that integrates various technologies to improve the safety, efficiency, and sustainability of transportation networks.

GTrans, has been providing safe and reliable local bus service to Southern California’s South Bay since 1940, when its first buses carried passengers traveling between Gardena and downtown Los Angeles, making stops at popular destinations like Los Angeles City Hall and the Gardena Civic Center. GTrans now operates five bus routes in and around Gardena, connecting to major transportation centers and downtown Los Angeles.

The CAD component of the system refers to software that enables dispatchers to manage the allocation of vehicles and drivers in real-time, based on information such as vehicle location, driver availability, and passenger demand. It helps transportation agencies optimize fleet operations, reduce response times, and improve overall service quality.

The AVL aspect is the hardware and software that track the location and movement of vehicles in real-time using GPS technology. It enables transportation agencies to monitor vehicle movements, identify operational issues, and provide accurate arrival time estimates to passengers.

Together, the CAD/AVL system provides transportation agencies with comprehensive situational awareness and helps them to make informed decisions in real-time. This type of system is commonly used in public transit systems, emergency services, and commercial fleet operations, and can be a valuable tool in improving transportation safety and efficiency.

We are providing business process analysis, developing technical specifications, and providing bid analysis and procurement support on this endeavor.

Project Highlights:

  • We conducted a detailed analysis of GTran's current operations and business practices, recommending functionality to support and improve those processes and identifying crucial requirements.
  • Our mobility experts wrote a full technical specification to support the procurement process and ensure that the business needs of GTrans were met.
  • TYLin will utilize GTrans’ expertise with CAD/AVL systems to evaluate the bids received and recommend a vendor.
