T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that Marwan Nader, Ph.D., P.E., TYLI Vice President and Technical Director of the firm’s Bridge Line of Business, received a 2014 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award from the American University of Beirut (AUB). Nader, who received his BEng with Distinction at AUB in 1986, received the award at the university’s 13th Faculty of Engineering and Architecture Student and Alumni Conference on April 23, 2014.

AUB’s Distinguished Alumni of the Year Awards recognize alumni for their individual achievements, contributions to their industries or professions, service to their community, and demonstrated loyalty to the university. Following the award presentation, Nader presented his latest paper, Evolution of Bridge Engineering and Modern Day Challenges, to the faculty and students of AUB’s Civil and Environmental Engineering Department.

“I am deeply honored to have received a 2014 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award from my alma mater, the American University of Beirut,” said Nader. “This is where my 25-year career in bridge design and engineering began, which has led to my role as Technical Director for T.Y. Lin International, a recognized world leader in the design of signature bridges.”

Following his graduation from AUB, Nader earned his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1992, and a Post Doctorate in the institution’s Structural Engineering, Management and Materials (SEMM) Program. After completing his doctoral research on the seismic performance of steel structures, his dissertation guidelines on the design of semi-rigid steel connections were adopted by the American Institute of Steel Construction in its Seismic Design Manual.

Nader most recently served as Engineer of Record for TYLI’s design of the self-anchored suspension span of the new East Span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge, the world’s longest single-tower, self-anchored suspension span (2,047 feet) and the widest bridge in the world (258.33 feet). He has also served as Project Manager on major international projects, such as the Soyo-Cabinda Transportation Link in the Republic of Angola and the Bandra-Worli Bridge in India. His current projects include the Izmit Bay Bridge in Turkey, the Second Namhae Bridge in South Korea, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in the United States.

Founded in 1866, AUB is a private, independent, secular, and English-speaking university in Beirut, Lebanon, and ranked as the number one university in the country. Degrees awarded at AUB are officially registered with the New York Board of Regents. Listed as the first American university located outside of the United States, AUB collaborates with other renowned universities around the world.
