T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that the new East Span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge (East Span) has won the 2014 Globe Award from the American Road & Transportation Builders Association Transportation Development Foundation (ARTBA-TDF). The first-place award is for bridges over $100 million. TYLI, in a joint venture with Moffatt & Nichol, was the lead design engineering firm on the East Span project. TYLI joined other project partners in accepting the 2014 Globe Award at ARTBA-TDF’s 15th Annual Globe Awards event on June 10, 2014 in Washington, D.C.

The new 2.2-mile-long East Span made history when it opened to traffic on September 2, 2013. Built to last 150 years, it is the longest, single-tower Self-Anchored Suspension Span (SAS) in the world and the world’s widest bridge. The SAS employs a single, 2.6-foot diameter cable that measures nearly a mile long, which is the largest and longest cable ever used for a bridge of its type. Connecting to the Oakland shoreline, the 1.2-mile-long Skyway is the longest segment of the East Span and features sweeping parallel decks that accommodate five lanes of traffic in each direction and a 2-mile-long bicycle/pedestrian path. TYLI worked closely with the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans), the Metropolitan Transportation Commission (MTC), and the California Transportation Commission (CTC) in order to design a critical Lifeline Structure that is seismically-sound and meets the aesthetic and functional demands of Bay Area communities.

The East Span has been previously honored with the 2014 Special Recognition Award from the California Transportation Foundation, the 2013 Project of the Year Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Region 9, and the 2013 Outstanding Transportation Project Award from ASCE, San Francisco Section.

The annual ARTBA-TDF Globe Awards honor and draw attention to private-sector firms and public-sector transportation agencies that do an outstanding job protecting and/or enhancing the natural environment in the planning, design and construction of U.S. transportation infrastructure projects. Established in 1902 and headquartered today in Washington, D.C., ARTBA is the “consensus voice” of the U.S. transportation design and construction industry.
