T.Y. Lin International (TYLI) was the prime consultant for the $65 million transformation of Niagara Falls State Park in Niagara Falls, NY. Working alongside the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (NYSOPRHP), TYLI pioneered the work of a six-firm ensemble to produce a new version of the park that harmonizes with its distinction as an international tourist destination.

The project implemented a series of more than 16 full-scale, interconnected projects across 400+ acres. Gone are the days of disrepair, undersized overlooks, inadequate pedestrian circulation, and antiquated systems. Today, the park is a thriving picture of sustainability, state-of-the-art innovation, and ADA (Americans with Disabilities) accessibility. The enhancements touch nearly every major aspect of the park. Our landscape architecture subconsultant crafted the vision for each element; TYLI’s engineering team transported the designs to reality.

Each design is consistent with Frederick Law Olmsted’s original, though never implemented, plan to improve public access to the wonder of the Falls while safeguarding the natural and scenic vistas. Contributing disciplines encompassed site/civil, geotechnical, structural, mechanical, and electrical engineering; environmental permitting; surveying; landscape architecture; and architecture.

Project Highlights:

  • The goals of this massive five-year initiative were far too vast for one firm. Effective and efficient collaboration overseen by TYLI ensured the project’s success.
  • Everything – attractions, infrastructure, buildings, parking facilities, lighting systems, pedestrian and vehicle circulation routes, and behind the scenes utility, mechanical, electrical, irrigation, and stormwater systems – has been upgraded with state-of-the-art technology. Technology that contends with the Park’s relentless winter icing. Several of these systems serve as models for parks throughout New York State.
  • The early phases of the project were so successful, NYSOPRHP added assignments, funding and timelines to maximize the revitalization. TYLI completed the project within the expanded schedule and budget.
  • The entire park is now ADA accessible. Physical abilities no longer define who enjoys this natural wonder.
  • Key team leaders were on-site regularly for in-person progress meetings with designers, park managers, individual project managers, contractors, and construction managers. The hands-on approach fostered quick solutions to complex issues allowing designs to evolve in the field to progress the reconstruction.
  • Nine million visitors travel from all over the world to see the majestic beauty of the oldest State Park in the United States. With the park open throughout construction, logistics and public safety proved to be some of the endeavor’s greatest challenges. TYLI overcame each challenge to elevate the park to reflect its prominence as a national treasure.
