T.Y. Lin International was retained to provide Phase I-VI design services to NYSDOT for the bridge replacement portion of this highway improvement project. The proposed widening of Transit Road to five lanes, combined with required provisions for improved vertical clearance, necessitated the replacement of the existing through-girder railroad bridge. The replacement bridge consisted of a 100-foot, single-span structure (existing span was approximately 48 feet) on conventional concrete abutments.
Due to the need for maintenance of traffic on the heavily traveled highway, and for compliance with Norfolk-Southern’s requirement that rail traffic be maintained throughout construction, a three-span temporary bridge/on-site rail detour was designed. An innovative method was developed that incorporated a portion of the permanent in-line wingwall for use as the temporary bridge abutment, resulting in a significant cost savings for the project. TYLI’s designated responsibilities included: structural inspection and design, trackwork design, Norfolk-Southern coordination, and highway coordination. The design of a temporary H-Pile wall with two levels of tieback anchors supporting the railroad for a 25-foot excavation was also required. Designs were in accordance with AREMA, AASHTO, and NYSDOT specifications.
