ORD Terminal 5 Expansion
TYLin provided design services for airside and landside improvements for the Terminal 5 Expansion project at O’Hare International Airport in Chicago, Illinois.
The project increases gate capacity for ORD’s international terminal and adds restaurants and other amenities for travelers.
The Terminal 5 Expansion project includes a 300,000-square-foot extension of the terminal, including reconfiguring aircraft parking at four existing gates and providing six additional contact gates and four new hardstand positions.
TYLin’s scope of work included designs for apron paving, roadway paving, loading dock area, electrical utility and underground airside electrical distribution, landside public and airport secure communication system expansions, natural gas utility, and sanitary and storm drainage.
Additional design elements included 22 passenger boarding bridges, 400Hz gate boxes, Pre-Conditioned Air (PCA) units, Visual Guidance Docking System (VDGS), apron and roadway lighting, security fencing, a blast fence, fueling stations, a new Airside Access Security gate, a new Triturator facility, and snow-melting areas.
To accommodate the expanded terminal building and aprons, TYLin’s scope was increased to include the design of 1500 linear feet of new taxilane and 1000 linear feet of reconfigured taxilane and connectors. An existing 880,000-square foot hold and de-icing pad were also reconfigured into two parallel 1300-linear-foot taxiways and three connector taxiways.
TYLin also designed modifications to existing areas of Terminal 5 to reconfigure five wide and narrow body aircraft parking positions into six narrow body and two two-for-one Multiple Apron Ramp System (MARS) positions. Modifications included adjustments to two existing wide body gates to accommodate the 100,000-square-foot remodel and expansion of the core of the terminal.
Project Highlights:
- Designs for the new taxilanes and reconfigured airside infrastructure included new taxilane pavement and markings, airfield lighting and signage systems, and synthetic turf infield areas.
- TYLin’s designs included a 7000-linear-foot, 96-inch-diameter storm drain connection, which comprises 2000 linear feet of directional boring in two locations under an active runway and an active taxiway.
- Over 3000 linear feet of retaining wall was utilized around the new apron and hardstand areas.
- Modifications to the existing terminal included apron paving, utilities, drainage, 11 passenger boarding bridges, 400Hz gate boxes, PCA units, VGDS, lighting systems, and fueling stations.
