JFK Taxiway

TYLin provided design and construction administration services for the rehabilitation of Taxiway B, segments of Taxiways A, R, and S and the Restricted Vehicle Service Road (RVSR) at John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK) in New York, New York.

The project helped enable smooth airside operations at the busiest international airport for travelers arriving in North America.

Scope of work included providing concrete pavement design, including asphalt pavement resurfacing and grading improvements for 5,900 linear feet of Taxiway B and a total of 2,000 linear feet of segments of parallel Taxiway A and several connecting taxiways.

Other improvements included rehabilitating taxiway shoulders and erosion pavement, creating new grass areas, revising the alignment of Taxiways R and S, plus fillet revisions, new guidance signage, and adjustments to airfield lighting. The approaches to four taxiway bridges were also replaced with concrete pavement totaling 1,600 linear feet.

TYLin worked closely with airport operations staff to develop a construction schedule, staging plan, and phasing plan to maintain a Group VI taxiway route. The staging and phasing plans included multiple concurrent work areas and a combination of daytime and nighttime (off-peak) work hours.

Project Highlights:

  • TYLin provided fast-track airfield and electrical design services to meet the aggressive construction schedule and minimize impacts to airfield operations.
  • The work included the adjustment of numerous drainage and utility structures and drainage improvements to a nearby airside service road.
  • Multiple construction stages involving day and night construction were required to accomplish the work while maintaining heavy terminal area traffic, including A380 aircraft.
  • Pavement rehabilitation included both asphalt cement (AC) mill and overlay, and full depth pavement replacement using Portland cement concrete (PCC) pavement.
