Chesapeake Bay Bridges

TYLin served as Engineer of Record for a new cable dehumidification system for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in Maryland.

Serving local communities for over 50 years, the Chesapeake Bay Bridge crosses 186 feet above Chesapeake Bay and is a vital link between the State of Maryland’s eastern and western shores.

The cable dehumidification system for the Chesapeake Bay Bridge is the first of its kind in North America, and designed to extend the service life of the main cables.

Technologies introduced by TYLin represent a significant advancement in the rehabilitation and preservation of historic suspension bridges.

PROJECT HIGHLIGHTS:

  • A cable wrap system secures air tightness, with dehumidified airflow maintained through the cables to prevent corrosion and preserve load-carrying strength.
  • TYLin’s full shop demonstrations determined ideal cable wrap patterns.
  • Adequate airflow is achieved through efficient sealing, optimal placement of injection and exhaust points, well-calibrated instrumentation, and effective mechanical, monitoring, and control systems.
