GPO, A TYLin Company, designed the expansion of Highway 407 ETR (Express Toll Route) in Toronto, Canada.

Highway 407 East (407E) is an express toll motorway that surrounds the Greater Toronto Area (GTA), going through Burlington, Oakville, Mississauga, Brampton, Vaughan, Markham, and Pickering towards the north of Toronto. This project, deemed as one of the world’s biggest road infrastructures under concession, reduces traffic from Highway 401.

In June 2014, approximately 350,000 cars circulated per day. The Extension of the 407 East Highway project constituted a 65-km extension of the existing 407, going beyond Brock Road. Construction was planned in two stages.

The 407 ETR was a pioneer in the implementation of the most modern toll systems, equipped with cameras and license-recognition transponders which replaced traditional toll booths.

Project Highlights:

  • Construction included 16.5 km of new highway, with certain stretches comprising up to five lanes per direction, with more than 36 km of branches and access roads, and four new links.
  • The alignment was designed with aesthetic and environmental considerations, including gardened embankments and rainwater sewerage pools, as well as a system of drains and sewers for urban roads.
