TYLin is providing design and construction services for the new CAD 100 million Midhurst Wastewater Treatment Plant (Midhurst WWTP) in Midhurst, Ontario, Canada.
This greenfield 12-megaliters-per-day (MLD) plant and its advanced wastewater treatment processes and technologies will be designed to achieve some of the lowest and most strict effluent discharge criteria in Ontario. The design objective is 0.03 milligrams per liter (mg/L) for Total Phosphorus (TP).
The Midhurst WWTP will service a new development of close to 10,000 homes or 30,000 people. The project allows for sustainable family-oriented communities to be built in the region while transforming wastewater into clean water to preserve the health of local waterways and wetlands.
TYLin is currently providing contract administration and site supervision for the CAD 20 million interim ion exchange water treatment plant. This plant removes nitrates from the production wells and packaged membrane bioreactor (MBR) wastewater treatment plant designed to service the initial phases of residential and commercial development in Midhurst.
With the interim facilities under construction, TYLin has started the detailed design of the first phase of the permanent wastewater plant, working closely with subconsultant Stantec Consulting Ltd.
The detailed design of the Midhurst WWTP is scheduled to be completed in 2022. Construction will start in 2023 and commissioning will take place in 2024.
Some of the key design features include:
- Onsite sewage pump station with emergency storage
- Biological Nitrogen Removal (BNR) with step feed
- Secondary clarifiers discharging to 1- to-2 milimetre fine screens
- Tertiary membranes with chemical addition for polishing and ultimate removal of TP to low levels, followed by ultraviolet (UV) disinfection prior to discharge to a local creek five kilometres away
- Autothermal Thermophilic Aerobic Digestion (ATAD) for stabilizing the sludge for beneficial reuse
- Glass-lined steel storage tanks with jet mixing, geodesic domes, and odour control for 240 days of biosolids storage prior to land application
