Panama Metro - Tocumen Airport Line 2 Extension Wins 2024 ENR Global Best Project Award of Merit
Project recognized for exemplary planning and design in busy urban environment
SAN FRANCISCO, CA – TYLin, a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that the Panama Metro - Tocumen Airport Line 2 Extension project in Panama City, Panama, has been honored with the Award of Merit (Rail/Transit category) in Engineering News-Record’s (ENR) 2024 Global Best Projects competition. TYLin provided conceptual and detailed design services for this complex project for Consorcio Línea 2 Ramal.
ENR’s Global Best Projects Awards celebrate the most innovative and impactful construction projects worldwide, emphasizing resilience and ingenuity in overcoming complex challenges. The award was presented during the ENR Awards Program on December 19, 2024.
The 1.96-kilometer, double-rail line extension, known as El Ramal, connects Line 2 of the Panama Metro with the Instituto Técnico Superior del Este (ITSE) and Tocumen International Airport, and includes two new stations. The project supplies much-needed connectivity between the airport and the city's main public transportation service network for the thousands of passengers and workers who travel daily through the airport.
The extension’s elevated guideway and stations are supported on drilled shaft foundations. The ITSE station is 126 meters long with a level for the vestibule and train platform and a ground-level auxiliary building for all technical services. The Airport Station is 159 meters long and has one vestibule/platform level that includes the design provision for a future connection with the Tocumen Airport-Terminal 2 Building. An auxiliary building for technical services is located across the street.
“On behalf of TYLin and the entire project team, I want to thank Engineering News-Record for honoring the Panama Metro - Tocumen Airport Line 2 Extension project for its innovation, technical excellence, and the benefits it brings to the traveling public in Panama’s vital capital city.” said Ing. José Ameth Rodríguez, TYLin Project Manager. “This project clearly demonstrates TYLin’s expertise in designing large, complex rail and transit projects in dense urban environments and adjacent to sensitive infrastructure. We are tremendously pleased to have played a key role on this critical transportation project.”
The Panama Metro - Tocumen Airport Line 2 Extension joins a growing list of Transportation projects delivered by TYLin in Panama. Other projects include Panama Metro Line One, the first metro system ever built in Central America, and the ENR Global Best Project Award-winning Cinta Costera Phase III Viaduct, Tocumen International Airport Expansion Program, and Panama Metro Line 2.
