T.Y. Lin International Propels South Carolina Aeronautical Training Center to Win Top AIA South Carolina Honor Award
T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that Trident Technical College’s South Carolina Aeronautical Training Center in Charleston has earned an Honor Award (New Construction) in the 2020 Virtual Design Awards competition of the American Institute of Architects (AIA) South Carolina Chapter. TYLI provided the original concept development and engineering for the sustainable, Two Green Globes-certified, $64 million workforce training center. The Honor Award is the AIA’s top prize in a category.
TYLI’s Facilities team from the Charleston, South Carolina, office capitalized on its higher education, advanced manufacturing, industrial, office, and aviation project experience to secure the $10 million Phase I of this project. Phase I included the visioning, master planning, site/building programming, site civil engineering, and building concept design for the flagship project.
TYLI teamed with the Carolinas’ largest architectural firm, LS3P Associates, to provide Phase II services and progress the building from Conceptual Design through Construction Administration.
Taking inspiration from the style and shape of aircraft, the South Carolina Aeronautical Training Center features a mix of graceful curves, dramatic lines, and glass walls. The facility is being used to develop local talent for the aviation and avionics manufacturing industries. It will also play a key role in the economic development of the region within the aviation and technology clusters.
TYLI’s services included landscape architecture and structural, civil, mechanical, electrical, and fire protection engineering for the 164,000-square-foot facility. The firm also provided construction contract administration throughout both project phases. The new building includes 25 specialty labs, six flex-space labs, 22 classrooms, 37 faculty/staff offices, and two aviation hangars with high bays to accommodate large aircraft training aids.
The project extended Trident Technical College’s main campus into 67 acres of undeveloped wetlands called the “Enterprise Campus,” which focuses on innovative technology. Site design included a 100,000-square-foot aircraft ramp/apron, bus and car drop off drives, a vehicular bridge across wetlands, parking, site retention ponds and bioswales, drainage, utilities, sewer, mechanical pads, paint hanger, aircraft engine blast deflectors, aircraft tie-down systems, and all stormwater design.
TYLI’s scope of work included landscape plans for all plazas, planters, and areas around the building footprint. TYLI’s structural engineers developed foundation, floor, and roof framing plans, elevations, and details in support of the project, including Category II & III displacement-based seismic design and 143 mph ultimate wind load considerations. The firm’s mechanical, electrical and plumbing and fire protection experts provided heating, cooling, and domestic water/plumbing design for the building, all building electrical and photovoltaic design, and fire sprinkler systems and fire alarm systems designs.
Additionally, TYLI assisted the prime architect by providing the design and documentation for the civil, mechanical, energy, plumbing, and electrical elements of the facility for New Construction certification from the Green Building Initiative. Along with receiving this prestigious certification, the South Carolina Aeronautical Training Center project also achieved a Two Green Globes rating. A project worthy of Two Green Globes “demonstrates excellent progress in achieving a reduction of environmental impacts and use of environmental efficiency practices.”
