I-10 Broadway Curve

The I-10 between the I-17 “Split” interchange and the Loop 202 Santan and South Mountain Freeways spans the cities of Phoenix, Chandler, and Tempe, and the town of Guadalupe. The 11-mile segment is one of Arizona’s Key Commerce Corridors and the busiest in the state, carrying over 300,000 vehicles through the Broadway Curve daily.  

The I-10 Broadway Curve project is the Arizona Department of Transportation’s (ADOT) largest urban freeway reconstruction project, bringing benefits such as increased capacity, reduced travel times, and improved access to Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport and thousands of businesses along the construction corridor. 

TYLin and its teaming partners, the joint venture of Pulice Construction, Inc., FNF Construction, Inc., and Flatiron Constructors, Inc., were selected for the Public-Private Partnership (P3) and Design-Build (D-B) project by ADOT, the Cities of Phoenix and Tempe, and the Maricopa Association of Governments. 

As the Lead Design Firm, TYLin worked alongside its joint venture partners during the Request for Proposal (RFP) phase to develop an innovative concept using 3D renderings to include all ADOT’s planned improvements. Improvements include:  

• Widening I-10 to six general-purpose and two high-occupancy vehicle (HOV) lanes between 24th Street and U.S. 60  
• Building a collector-distributor road system between Baseline Road and 40th Street 
• Adding a fourth general-purpose lane from U.S. 60 to Ray Road, keeping the HOV lane 
• Modifying I-10 connections to improve traffic flow and safety 
• Replacing interchange ramps  
• Adding two bridges over I-10 for pedestrians and bicyclists 
• Installing and upgrading Freeway Management System (FMS) facilities and dynamic message signs (DMS) 

Project Highlights: 

• TYLin and its teaming partners were selected due to innovation and the development of alternative concepts to reduce project time and impacts on the traveling public and local communities during construction. 
• Project scope also includes modifications to bridges, widening of an existing bridge to accommodate a multi-use path, sound walls, drainage improvements, and relocation of utilities in the corridor.  
• Construction for the I-10 Broadway Curve Improvement Project began in late 2021 and will last up to four years.
