Luzhou Second Yangtze River Bridge
TYLin served as Engineer of Record (Design) for the Luzhou Second Yangtze River Bridge, the second river crossing in Luzhou City in the Sichuan Province of Chongqing, China.
The Luzhou Second Yangtze River Bridge connects Qiancao Island and Airport Avenue. After the completion of the bridge, it will open the east gate of the central urban area and become the most convenient fast passage from Chengdu Luzhou Chishui Expressway to the core area of Luzhou City.
As the Bridge Designer, TYLin worked to create a design that is both structurally efficient and seamlessly integrated with the local culture. For example, the concept for the portal-shaped frames for the towers was inspired by the desire to invite and welcome guests from all over the world.
The Luzhou Second Yangtze River Bridge is a 2,179-meter-long, 31.1-meter-wide suspension bridge with a double-deck superstructure. The upper deck carries six lanes of vehicular traffic, while the lower deck is reserved for two lanes of rail transit tracks.
The main structural system comprises two towers and three continuous spans of stiffened steel-truss girders (70 meters, 576-meter main span, and 70 meters) with isotropic decks.
The approach structures on the east and west sides of the bridge are formed by three 50-meter-long prestressed concrete box girder segments. The cross-section of the approach girders is a multi-cell, single trapezoidal box with a height of 2.8 meters.
The east tower measures 133.5 meters high, and the west tower is 123 meters high. The portal-shaped tower frame consists of two reinforced concrete pylons connected by upper and lower prestressed concrete crossbeams, with steel saddles at the top for setting the suspension cable.
Project Highlights:
- The triangular steel-truss system is 11.335 meters high and 14.4 meters long, with a center-to-center width of 16 meters.
- The bridge’s main suspension cables are ground anchored.
- The suspenders that hang from the suspension cables are limited to the length of the main span.
