MCO Automated People Mover Guideway
TYLin designed the structural components and associated infrastructure for the southern portion of the Automated People Mover (APM).
The Automated People Mover (APM) system carries travelers from Orlando International Airport’s (MCO) main landside terminal to the South Terminal APM Complex.
The project was completed on behalf of the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) in Orlando, Florida.
The purpose of the project was to increase capacity and expedite passenger movement. Work included the evaluation and design of improvements to the existing structural guideway of the intermodal APM system’s northern portion and the existing Airsides 1 and 3 APM systems.
TYLin designed the new pier foundations, support columns, superstructure, and guideway track to carry the APM system through to the new Intermodal Center. TYLin’s services included engineering studies and design services through bid and award, permitting, and construction.
To ensure a seamless traveler experience, TYLin coordinated the project with the future expansion of the South Terminal APM Complex.
Project Highlights:
- TYLin completed the structural inspection of the 3,150 linear-foot portion (18 spans) of the existing, decade-old APM guideway to determine the repairs and upgrades needed to accommodate the new rail vehicle system.
- Approximately 4,400 feet of guideway track was designed, with the track elevated to cross over several airport roadways and drainage facilities.
- GOAA benefited from TYLin’s proposed guideway structural software, which had been successfully applied to previous transit projects across the United States and globally.
- TYLin partnered with GOAA to identify construction methods that incorporated sustainability measures, including low emissions construction equipment and construction practices that eliminate dust during construction.
