T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that the University of California, Berkeley, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) has named Tung-Yen (T.Y.) Lin (CE MS ‘33), Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering and founder of TYLI, as an inductee of the 2014 Class of the CEE Academy of Distinguished Alumni. Professor Lin (1912-2003) held the position of Professor of Civil Engineering at the University from 1946-1976. He also served as Chairman of the Division of Structural Engineering and Structural Mechanics, Director of the Structural Engineering Laboratory, and Chairman of the Board of Educational Development. The CEE Academy of Distinguished Alumni was established in 2012 to recognize the professional achievements and contributions of CEE alumni.

Recognized as a pioneer in the use of prestressed concrete in modern structural design, Professor Lin’s projects are located throughout the world. He is considered a prolific innovator in the field of bridge design, with the vision to conceive and apply new technology and the ingenuity to design structures that have been described as beautiful and bold works of art.

Among his many honors, Professor Lin was elected to the National Academy of Engineering in 1967 and was a recipient of the National Medal of Science in 1986. In 2000, he was the first recipient of the American Society of Civil Engineers' (ASCE) Outstanding Lifetime Achievement in Design Award. In his honor, ASCE renamed its annual Prestressed Concrete Award the “T.Y. Lin Award.”

“We are honored that our founder, T.Y. Lin, has been recognized for his profound contributions to the University of California, Berkeley,” said Tony Peterson, President of TYLI Group. “His legacy of innovation in structural and bridge design can be seen today in projects led by T.Y.
