New development in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada will be one of the world's most sustainable, future-ready waterfront communities
TYLin, a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that Lakeview Village Development, a mixed-use Lake Ontario waterfront community under construction on a 177-acre brownfield development in Mississauga, Ontario, Canada, has won the Award of Excellence for Sustainable Development in the 2022 National Urban Design Awards (NUDA). As part of the consortium responsible for the planning of the development, TYLin provided designs, strategies, and impact assessments for transportation planning and traffic, municipal servicing, and water/wastewater and stormwater management, all with a focus on sustainability.
The National Urban Design Awards recognize individuals, organizations, firms, and projects that have contributed to enhancing the quality of life and the sustainability of Canadian communities through exceptional and thoughtful urban design. The awards are presented by The Royal Architectural Institute of Canada (RAIC), the Canadian Institute of Planners (CIP), and the Canadian Society of Landscape Architects (CSLA).
Lakeview Village Development is located at the site of the former Lakeview Generating Station on the Mississauga waterfront and will consist of a connected mix of residential, retail, employment, and institutional uses with interwoven public-realm features. The development integrates substantial greenspace, a fully rehabilitated shoreline dedicated to accessible public uses, high-order transit connectivity, and sustainable design approaches. These include Low Impact Development (LID) stormwater features and low-carbon green technologies such as District Energy and vacuum waste collection.
The jury behind the award selection noted, "The Lakeview Village stands out in its commitment to sustainability in the urban context. The proposed reduction in energy consumption centred around wastewater heat recovery and a district-level energy plant is commendable. The' 15-minute city' is walkable and socially sustainable, and the myriad of practical, proven green technologies all come together to make this a model for future sustainable development."
NUDA also spotlighted the site's natural environment, which serves as an outstanding feature of the development through the remediation of Serson Creek, a 600-metre pier on Lake Ontario, and access to the adjacent Jim Tovey Lakeview Conservation Area.
TYLin's Sustainability Strategy report recommended elements such as LID features to achieve both water quality and water balance targets. The firm's transportation network plan also focuses on multi-modal transportation solutions, including an extensive on- and off-street active transportation network, transit-first travel demand philosophies, future high-order transit connections, and reduced reliance on single-vehicle occupant travel. All are supported by a fine-grain local roadway network maximizing route choice and permeability.
"TYLin congratulates Lakeview Community Partners Limited and their project team for receiving the prestigious Award of Excellence for Sustainable Development in the 2022 National Urban Design Awards," said Abe Khademi, P.Eng., TYLin Senior Vice President and Water Sector Lead, Americas Region. "Lakeview Village Development began with the vision to bring one of the world's most sustainable waterfront communities to the shores of Mississauga. Thanks to an unwavering commitment to sustainability, net zero energy, healthy living, and smart city innovation, that vision will now guide the future of sustainable development in Canada."
The Lakeview Village Development project is being performed by The Municipal Infrastructure Group Ltd. (TMIG), now doing business as TYLin.
