T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that Marwan Nader, Ph.D., P.E., TYLI Vice President, Technical Director for the firm’s Bridge Line of Business and a member of TYLI’s Board of Directors, has been appointed to the University of California, Berkeley, Civil and Environmental Engineering Advisory Council. The Advisory Council is a select committee of professional engineers, business leaders, academic and higher education leaders, and government and policy officials who are dedicated to contributing to a dynamic and robust civil and environmental engineering profession and furthering the important role of engineering education and research for addressing societal problems.

“I am honored to have been appointed to the University of California, Berkeley, Civil and Environmental Engineering Advisory Council,” said Dr. Nader. “As a member, I look forward to investing my 25-plus years of experience in all phases of bridge design and construction engineering toward the future growth of the University’s Civil and Environmental Engineering department, already one of the best research and educational programs in the world.”

Dr. Nader earned his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, in 1992, followed by a Post Doctorate in the institution’s Structural Engineering, Management and Materials (SEMM) Program. Following his doctoral research on the seismic performance of steel structures, his dissertation guidelines on the design of semi-rigid steel connections were adopted by the American Institute of Steel Construction in its Seismic Design Manual.

The author of numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals, Dr. Nader is a regular presenter at leading national and international industry conferences. He serves on the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies’ Committee on Steel Bridges and is Chair of the Structural Engineering Institute’s Cable Supported Bridge Committee. In 2004, Dr. Nader received the prestigious Arthur M. Wellington Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers. Later this month, Dr. Nader will receive the 2014 Distinguished Alumni of the Year Award, Civil Engineering and Architecture, from his alma mater, the American University of Beirut.

Among Dr. Nader’s TYLI bridge projects, he most recently served as Engineer of Record for the design of the world record-breaking self-anchored suspension span of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. He has also served as Project Manager on major international projects, such as the Soyo-Cabinda Transportation Link in the Republic of Angola and the Bandra-Worli Bridge in India. His current projects include the Izmit Bay Bridge in Turkey, the Second Namhae Bridge in South Korea, and the Chesapeake Bay Bridge in the United States.
