Marwan Nader, Ph.D., P.E., Named 2015 Distinguished Alumnus by University of California, Berkeley, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering
T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that the University of California, Berkeley, Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE) has named Marwan Nader, Ph.D., P.E., TYLI Senior Vice President and Technical Director for the firm’s Bridge Line of Business, as an inductee of the 2015 Class of the CEE Academy of Distinguished Alumni. Dr. Nader was honored at the Academy of Distinguished Alumni Event & CEE Fall Distinguished Lecture on October 8, 2015. The CEE Academy of Distinguished Alumni was established in 2012 to recognize the professional achievements and contributions of CEE alumni.
Dr. Nader earned his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering from the University of California, Berkeley, (UC Berkeley) in 1992, followed by a Post Doctorate in the institution’s Structural Engineering, Management and Materials (SEMM) Program. Following his doctoral research on the seismic performance of steel structures, Dr. Nader’s dissertation guidelines on the design of semi-rigid steel connections were adopted by the American Institute of Steel Construction in its Seismic Design Manual.
Since March 2014, Dr. Nader has served on the UC Berkeley CEE Advisory Council, a select committee of professional engineers, business leaders, academic and higher education leaders, and government and policy officials who are dedicated to contributing to a dynamic and robust civil and environmental engineering profession and furthering the important role of engineering education and research for addressing societal problems.
With over 25 years of experience in all phases of bridge design, construction engineering, and forensic engineering, Dr. Nader is known worldwide as an industry leader in ground-breaking seismic engineering technologies. He has also led TYLI teams on some of the world’s most complex and iconic bridge projects. As a noteworthy example, Dr. Nader recently served as Engineer of Record for the design of the award-winning, single-tower Self-anchored Suspension Span (SAS) of the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge New East Span, which lies in a high seismic zone. Utilizing leading research on the use of shear link beams used in eccentrically braced building frames, Dr. Nader designed the signature tower to comprise four separate, steel legs connected by seismic movement-absorbing shear link beams, an industry first. He also led the design of the SAS’s unique, three-dimensional, single-cable, looped suspension cable system, which uses the largest cable saddle in the world.
Among Dr. Nader’s current projects for TYLI, he is serving as Lead Design Engineer for the New Champlain Bridge over the Saint Lawrence River in Montréal, Canada; as Project Manager for the construction support of the Izmit Bay Bridge in Turkey; and as Project Manager for the construction engineering of the Second Namhae Bridge in South Korea.
A regular presenter at national and international industry conferences and a prodigious publisher of technical papers, Dr. Nader holds leadership roles in numerous organizations. He serves as Chair of the Structural Engineering Institute’s (SEI) Cable-Supported Bridges Committee and is a Board member of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE). He also remains involved with the Pacific Earthquake Engineering Research Center (PEER), the primary earthquake engineering research arm of the State of California, and the International Association for Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE). In addition, Dr. Nader serves on the Transportation Research Board of the National Academies (TRB), AFF020 Committee on Steel Bridges, which is tasked with keeping the transportation community current on national/international research related to the design, rating and rehabilitation of steel bridges.
