New Champlain Bridge Ranks #1 in Roads & Bridges’ Top 10 Bridges
The New Champlain Bridge over the St. Lawrence River in Montréal, Québec, Canada, ranked #1 in the Roads & Bridges Top 10 Bridges of 2018. TYLI is serving as Lead Designer and Managing Partner in a joint venture for the fast-track bridge replacement project. Roads & Bridges’ Top 10 Bridge awards recognize the top projects in North America based on project challenges, impact to the region, and scope of work.
The 3.4-kilometer-long New Champlain Bridge is the cornerstone of the Government of Canada’s New Champlain Bridge Corridor Project, one of the largest infrastructure projects in North America. The crossing consists of three independent superstructures: the 529-meter-long, asymmetric cable-stayed bridge (CSB), with a single, 155-meter-high tower; the 762-meter-long East Approach; and the 2,044-meter-long West Approach. The three-corridor design includes two three-lane corridors for vehicular traffic, a transit corridor capable of accommodating a light-rail transit system, and a multi-use path for pedestrians and cyclists.
Along with an aggressive design-build schedule, the project included stringent design and performance criteria. Durability was a critical design element for the designated lifeline structure, which has a service life of 125 years. Site challenges have included construction under Montréal’s severe winter conditions, wind and seismic hazards, strict navigational requirements, and construction in a densely developed urban center. To meet such challenges, the project team utilized an innovative combination of largescale precasting, modular segments with post-tensioning, and creative erection sequencing.
