Oakland Touchdown Detour Project Completed Ahead of Schedule

T.Y. Lin International (TYLI) is pleased to announce the successful completion of the Oakland Touchdown Detour (OTD) project. As the prime design engineer, TYLI provided full services from developing the basic concept to delivering final design plans and providing construction support—all over a period of 12 months. Design was sequenced from the foundation upwards to expedite construction for the contractor.
The project entailed realigning traffic lanes and creating a detour just west of the toll plaza. This traffic shift enabled construction crews to demolish a section of the existing bridge which was in conflict with the eastbound deck of the new San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge. The westbound detour allows for a simultaneous opening of the west- and eastbound lanes of the new Bay Bridge by Labor Day, 2013. This work has reduced six to nine months from the overall construction schedule.
TYLI engineers worked hand in hand with Caltrans and MCM Construction around the clock over the three-day holiday weekend. The combination of efficient teamwork and good weather led crews to finish the work a day and a half earlier than originally planned.
