Silman, A TYLin Company, is providing structural and conservation engineering services for the renovation of McGraw Hall at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York.

The circa-1872 McGraw Hall building, the second one built on the Cornell campus, is load-bearing masonry walls. Prior to the current exterior and interior renovation project, Silman worked on the pre-project concept study (with Richard McElhiney Architects) to determine repair options.

The walls consist of limestone details and a local stone known as Llenroc. There are signs of movement on the exterior surfaces of the exterior load-bearing masonry walls.

The project, now in a scoping review design phase, will optimize the space usage and address the repairs needed to the exterior masonry walls and generally provide for the upgrading of the building.

Project Highlights:

  • The construction team will deploy extensive temporary shoring and bracing of the perimeter walls when the structural repairs are underway.
  • The project architect is Beyer Blinder Belle.
