NYBG Edible Academy
TYLin provided structural engineering services for a new LEED Gold certified classroom building at the New York Botanical Garden.
The new 5,300-square-foot building features a green roof, porous pavers, geothermal heating, and state-of-the-art kitchen facilities. The propagation greenhouse serves the expanded garden areas, accommodating 100,000 students and visitors annually.
As a homage to other buildings on the NYBG campus, the classroom building’s main support structure is comprised of trusses made from Douglas-Fir glulam members. Glulam members also support the covered terrace and classroom building interior. A large wooden deck extends the exterior terrace, providing views into the gardens and overhanging a dramatic rocky outcrop.
