TYLin provided Phase I Planning Services and Phase II Design Engineering and Architectural Services for the Cermak-McCormick Place Elevated Green Line Station in Chicago, Illinois.
Featuring an aesthetic structural steel tube that serves as a windbreak for the passenger boarding areas, Elevated Green Line Station fills an important transportation gap in Chicago’s Near South Side. The project was completed for the Chicago Department of Transportation and the Chicago Transit Authority (CTA).
For Phase I, TYLin prepared three alternative station designs and space layouts for each level. Other work included a CTA system analysis and recommendations for signal, communication, and train traction power improvements, a topographic survey, and a geotechnical program.
Following a detailed structural inspection of the existing elevated rail structure, TYLin provided a detailed structural analysis of the steel framing system. The century-old structure was then rated for potential retrofits. Based on the load rating, the platform for the new station was constructed independent from the existing track structure to avoid additional loads to the track stringer or bents.
TYLin’s platform design pushed the structural components to the outside, providing an enclosure that offers passengers a maximum open area for boarding and de-boarding and successfully addressing the maximum platform width of 15 feet.
For Phase II, TYLin coordinated all subconsultant deliverables, developed and implemented a Quality Assurance Plan, and prepared complete contract documents, including plans, specifications and construction cost estimates and construction schedules.
- The Green Line Station provides improved access to the McCormick Place convention center campus and supports the city’s efforts to revitalize the newly designated Motor Row entertainment district.
- The fully accessible station was built into and around an historic, 100-year-old elevated rapid transit structure while maintaining full transit service.
- TYLin coordinated with affected utilities and the City of Chicago Board of Underground to develop a utility mitigation plan.
- All phased construction was completed within the existing right-of-way.
- Work to accommodate the tube and platforms included the addition of six reinforced concrete piers between the existing steel bents.
