T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that the Dublin Link in Dublin, Ohio, was selected from a worldwide list of distinguished bridge projects to receive the 2021 Eugene C. Figg, Jr. Medal from the International Bridge Conference® (IBC). The Eugene C. Figg, Jr. Medal recognizes a single, recent outstanding achievement in bridge engineering that, through vision and innovation, provides an icon to the community for which it was designed.

A new landmark structure for the City of Dublin, the Dublin Link provides a critical transportation route for pedestrians and cyclists crossing the Scioto River. The signature pedestrian bridge is also central to the vibrant, walkable, mixed-use district being developed around the City's civic and historic core.

TYLI served as Prime Consultant for the final bridge design for the Dublin Link, working closely with the City to develop the unique bridge concept seen today. The final design resulted from a collaboration between TYLI and the architect, Endrestudio of Emeryville, California.

Designed to provide a safe, efficient crossing, the 760-foot-long Dublin Link was also engineered to offer a dramatic experience for users. The bridge follows a sinuous "S" curve alignment, with a steel superstructure that passes through the "eye" of the concrete pylon tower without any vertical support. The deck is a steel box girder with an asymmetric "V" form, which changes shape as users cross while maintaining a 14-foot clear deck width from end to end.

The focal point of the bridge is the 176-foot-tall pylon, which measures 110 feet high from the walking surface to the top of the tower. The bridge profile features one main suspension cable, with a single plane of hanger cables attached along only the inside edge of the curved bridge deck. Dynamic programmable lighting enables the City to change the color scheme of the bridge to different themes.

After completing the final design, TYLI also developed the project schedule and produced a plans, specifications, and estimates (PS&E) package, and solicited bids. The firm worked with numerous structural, civil, and electrical engineering firms based primarily in Ohio to maintain local consultant participation. The City selected a construction manager-general contractor delivery method for this project - a first in Ohio.

"On behalf of T.Y. Lin International, the City of Dublin, and the entire project team, we are very pleased that the International Bridge Conference® has selected the Dublin Link as the winner of this year's Eugene C. Figg, Jr. Medal for signature bridges," said Dan Fitzwilliam, P.E., TYLI Senior Bridge Engineer. "We are also tremendously pleased that T.Y. Lin International had the privilege of designing such an important and iconic symbol for the growth and vibrancy of Dublin communities and businesses."

The IBC, in conjunction with Bridge Design and Engineering Magazine, Roads and Bridges Magazine, Rail, Track and Structures Magazine, Covestro, and TranSystems, annually awards medals to recognize individuals and projects of distinction. The IBC is sponsored by the non-profit Engineers' Society of Western Pennsylvania (ESWP). The ESWP is an educational organization of Professional Engineers dedicated to advancing the engineering profession.

TYLI joined its project partners in accepting the 2021 Eugene C. Figg, Jr. Medal on June 8, 2021.
