T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, has won the 2013 Gold Quill Award from the International Association of Business Communicators (IABC) for The Bridge at Hoover Dam (2011, Nazraeli Press), the firm’s fine art book on the design, engineering and construction of the Hoover Dam Bypass/Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge. IABC’s annual Gold Quill Awards program honors the best of the best in global business communications.

“The Bridge at Hoover Dam commemorates the Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge, the highest and longest concrete arch bridge in the western hemisphere,” said Maribel Castillo, TYLI Associate Vice President and Director of Corporate Communications. “As lead design engineering firm, TYLI recognized an opportunity to tell the story behind the landmark span using a unique and elegant communications tool.”

The 1,900-ft. long bridge, which is located downstream from another engineering wonder, the Hoover Dam, is anchored in the walls of the Black Rock Canyon and crosses 890 feet above the Colorado River. It is the first concrete-steel composite arch bridge built in the United States. It is also the second-highest bridge of any kind in the United States, and features the tallest segmental concrete columns of any bridge in the world.

Designed to reflect the immense size and grandeur of the bridge itself, the oversized, hardcover monograph, features 60 museum-quality color photographs by renowned American photographer, Jamey Stillings. Along with Stillings’ breathtaking images, the book also includes essays by TYLI chief bridge engineer, David Goodyear, in which he describes the design process and engineering solutions developed for the iconic bridge.

The Bridge at Hoover Dam is now in the collections of the U.S. Library of Congress.

This year’s IABC Gold Quill Awards competition received nearly 800 entries from around the world. TYLI will receive the Award for the Publications category at the Gold Quill Awards gala to be held on June 24, 2013 at the IABC 2013 World Conference in New York City.
