Alabama Ave Corridor Study
TYLin was selected by the District of Columbia Department of Transportation (DDOT) to undertake a comprehensive safety study to identify operational and safety issues along the 4-mile Alabama Avenue, SE corridor and propose recommendations to improve multi-modal safety for all road users.
The project included extensive data collection and field review, analysis of police crash reports, traffic engineering analysis, public participation/stakeholder coordination, development of recommendations, and preparation of a final report. The traffic engineering recommendations included changes to lane configurations and cross-sections to better accommodate bicycles and pedestrians, new bicycle lanes, traffic signal modifications to enhance pedestrian safety, and innovative pedestrian crossing technology such as rapid flashing beacons and HAWK signals. The final report included an implementation matrix and planning-level cost estimates.
