Brooklyn Bus Network Redesign
Seventy-two local, BRT and express bus routes serve over 650,000 weekday riders in Brooklyn, NY. Serving as a consultant on the historic bus network redesign, TYLin applied advance analytics skills, assessing every route and planning the future network.
TYLin utilized Python programing in two major tasks. First, to understand if and how each route meets current and future demands, Python was used to integrated big-data sets of performance indexes (bus speed, ridership by bus stop, on-time performance, operation costs and detailed routing) into user friendly route profiles. Second, the team developed a complex model, using Python and Excel, to accurately project bus run-times, bus headways, and, operations cost.
Additionally, the team used Remix to review all bus routes and plan for different network scenarios. TYLin staff used their deep understanding of bus operations and service, and aim to improve customer experience and, ultimately, reverse declining ridership trends.
This redesign will lead to the development of a modern bus network, tailored to Brooklyn’s current needs and accounting for evolving demands and technologies. The new network is being thoroughly evaluated and scrutinized by the project team, stakeholders, and the public. TYLin is leading public engagement and providing planning guidance and technical assistance in every other task.
