Riudoms Wastewater Treatment Plant

The town of Riudoms had a wastewater treatment plant designed to handle wastewater from residential and industrial sources. However, this facility was operating at full capacity (designed for a flow of 1,000 m³/day) and exhibited several deficiencies.

These factors, along with projected population growth in the municipality, made the expansion of the wastewater treatment plant necessary.

The expanded plant now serves an equivalent population of 13,833 inhabitants, accommodates an average flow of 2,000 m³/day, and allows for nutrient reduction in the treated water.

This project includes:

  • The construction of a new pretreatment facility, a carousel-type biological treatment system, two settling tanks, and a sludge treatment line.
  • The two reactors (new and existing) and the two settling tanks ensure that the Riudoms wastewater treatment plant operates with two treatment lines.
  • The existing biological reactor’s aeration system is upgraded with bottom diffusers.
  • The sludge line includes a gravity thickener, a thickened sludge tank, centrifuge dewatering, and a dewatered sludge storage silo.
  • An odor control system is installed in the sludge area.
  • The current low-voltage electrical supply is replaced with a medium-voltage supply, and a transformer station is built.
  • An automation system based on PLCs and SCADA software is designed.
  • Unusable structures in the plant are demolished.
