TYLin provided complete design services for the East Tie-In, a complex traffic detour project within the suite of projects for the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge New East Span in Oakland, California.
Temporarily supported by 200-foot steel towers, the East Tie-In bypass structure allowed motorists to travel freely during the construction of the Yerba Buena Island Transition component of the New East Span bridge replacement project. The transition structure connected the existing double-deck configuration of the Yerba Buena Island tunnel to the replacement bridge.
Installing the 3,600-ton double-deck steel truss of the East Tie-in was performed 150 feet above ground. Workers removed an existing section of the former Bay Bridge using a skid bent system that rolled the old 300-foot-long truss span out of the way. Once the replacement span was rolled into position, traffic was redirected onto the detour structure.
The primary challenge of the project was to minimize disruption to the 280,000 vehicles that cross the bridge daily. Due to TYLin’s design, the East Tie-in was installed within a timeframe of only four days over a Labor Day weekend.
- The project team met the compressed schedule for the design, detailing, fabrication, and erection of close to 5,000 tons of structural steel.
- TYLin used an advanced Bridge Information Modeling (BrIM) application to facilitate and accelerate the construction schedule.
