FPO Airport Rehabilitation

grand bahama intl airport

TYLin provided design engineering and construction management services for the rehabilitation of the single runway at Grand Bahama International Airport (FPO) in Freeport, Bahamas.

The 11,000-foot-long by 150-foot-wide runway was constructed in the early 1970s.

Project challenges included preparing a design that minimized the amount of asphalt used, improving the cross slope, having taxiway exits comply to current International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards, and utilizing construction techniques that maintained daily runway operations.

Project Highlights:

  • Due to a short dry season, TYLin specified production rates that maximized work in any single work period, successfully limiting the project to 46 working days on the runway.
  • The project was unique in that asphalt mixes used durable trap rock imported from Canada, with construction plant and equipment shipped from China.
