Hoover Dam Bypass Receives International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) Centenary Award
T.Y. Lin International (TYLI) announces that the Hoover Dam Bypass has received a Centenary Award from the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC). FIDIC, an international organization representing consulting engineers in 88 nations, celebrated its centenary this year by honoring significant global engineering achievements over the last 100 years. The Hoover Dam Bypass was presented with the prestigious Award of Excellence for exemplary innovation, achievement and social value at FIDIC’s Gala Dinner in Barcelona, Spain, on September 17, 2013.
Projects considered for a Centenary Award had to be nominated by a FIDIC member firm, all of whom are associations of consulting engineers. The Hoover Dam Bypass was submitted by the American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). In 2011, ACEC honored the Hoover Dam Bypass with its Grand Conceptor Award, ACEC’s most important national award for overall best engineering project.
“We are tremendously proud to receive a FIDIC Centenary Award for the Hoover Dam Bypass,” said David Goodyear, TYLI Senior Vice President and Chief Bridge Engineer. “This award is especially significant as the Hoover Dam Bypass was one of just eight past Grand Conceptor Award winners selected to enter the FIDIC award program under ACEC’s membership, and one of only two U.S. projects chosen to receive a top FIDIC Centenary Award in the Major Civil Engineering Projects category.”
The Hoover Dam Bypass includes the 1,900-foot-long Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge, the design of which was led by TYLI’s Goodyear, along with 1.2 miles of approach roadway in Arizona and 2.3 miles of roadway in Nevada. The landmark crossing, also known as the Mike O’Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge, spans 890 feet above the Colorado River and 1,500 feet downstream of another engineering marvel - the Hoover Dam. The Hoover Dam Bypass Bridge is the highest and longest concrete arch in the Western Hemisphere. Ranking as the second-highest bridge of any kind in the United States, it also features the tallest concrete segmental columns of any bridge in the world.
Founded in 1913, FIDIC is charged with promoting and implementing the consulting engineering industry’s strategic goals on behalf of its 94 Member Associations and Associates and to disseminate information and resources of interest to its members. To learn more, go to FIDIC.org.
