T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that the San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge New East Span (East Span) has been presented with a 2014 Excellence in Structural Engineering Award from the National Council of Structural Engineers Associations (NCSEA). The NCSEA Excellence in Structural Engineering Awards honor structural engineering ingenuity throughout the world. Working with the California Department of Transportation, the Metropolitan Transportation Commission, and the California Transportation Commission, TYLI, in a joint venture with Moffatt & Nichol, was the Engineer of Record on the replacement project, which ranks as the largest public works project in State of California history. TYLI accepted the award at the 2014 Annual NCSEA Conference held in New Orleans, LA.

Opened to traffic on September 2, 2013, the East Span is located in a high seismic zone between two faults capable of producing large earthquakes. Seismic performance criteria included its designation as a Lifeline Structure that can open to emergency traffic shortly after the largest anticipated earthquake. The landmark bridge includes the 2,047-foot-long Self-Anchored Suspension Span (SAS); the 1.2-mile-long Skyway that rises up to the SAS from the Oakland shoreline; the 4,229-foot-long Oakland Touchdown connecting the Skyway to Interstate 80; and the 1,542-foot-long Yerba Buena Island Transition Structure linking the SAS to Yerba Buena Island. The new East Span is the world’s longest single-tower SAS and the world’s widest bridge.

To date, the iconic East Span has won the 2014 Award of Excellence from the Structural Engineers Association of California; the 2014 Special Recognition Award from the California Transportation Foundation; the 2014 Globe Award from the American Road & Transportation Builders Association; the 2014 America's Transportation Award for Best Use of Innovation, American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO); the 2013 Project of the Year Award from the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), Region 9; and the 2013 Outstanding Transportation Project Award from ASCE, San Francisco Section.

The East Span is also among the Top 10 finalists in the running to be named the best transportation project in the United States by AASHTO, AAA, and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce. The 2014 America’s Transportation Awards competition started with a record 73 entries from 36 states and the District of Columbia. As a finalist, the East Span is now competing for the coveted People’s Choice Award, which will be selected by popular vote. Online voting will be open until Friday, October 24, where the public can cast their vote up to ten times each day.
