TYLin provided planning, traffic analysis, and design and construction engineering services for a road diet and protected bike lanes on Logan Boulevard in Chicago, Illinois.

Logan Boulevard has long served as a link from the Logan Square neighborhood across the Chicago River and towards Lake Michigan and Chicago’s north side. In this area, Chicago’s reliable street grid breaks down, with the Kennedy Expressway and Chicago River limiting east-west street connectivity. That left busy Logan Boulevard as one of few options for people walking, biking, and driving.

Following the death of a bicyclist at the intersection of Logan Boulevard and Western Avenue, TYLin was tasked with an immediate redesign of Logan Boulevard, including the Western Avenue intersection, to improve the safety and comfort of all transportation modes, including biking.

Due to roadway constraints, protected bike lanes were only possible through a road diet, reducing Logan Boulevard from two travel lanes to one in each direction. TYLin led a data collection and traffic analysis process that included traffic counts, field observations, and a Synchro analysis to understand and manage the impacts of the road diet.

After implementation, additional field observations were conducted to monitor traffic operations and confirm the facility was operating as intended.

Project Highlights:

  • The success of the project demonstrates TYLin’s extensive understanding of roadway operations and the impact of design alternatives.
  • The project was planned, designed, and installed in a matter of months, transforming a significant barrier for people on bikes into an important low-stress connection.
