TYLin provided complete design services for the Pedestrian Overpass at University Metrorail Station in Coral Gables, Florida.
The 125-foot-long pedestrian bridge spans the busy US 1 Corridor and provides an important link between the adjacent University Metrorail Station and the residential and business neighborhoods of Coral Gables and the University of Miami campus.
As Lead Designer, TYLin provided design services for structural, mechanical, electrical, and civil engineering, architecture, surveying, right-of-way issues, soils investigation, utility identification and relocation, lighting, and maintenance of traffic.
The initial conceptual study phase included bridge design, public involvement activities, construction documents, technical specifications, and preparation of the engineer's estimate of probable construction cost.
TYLin’s context-sensitive design considered key factors such as quality of life, sustainability, the cultural environment, architectural styles, and public safety.
The design of the signature wave form is especially significant, drawing pedestrians and bicyclists to use the Pedestrian Overpass instead of crossing the heavily trafficked US 1/Mariposa Court intersection at street level.
- Public safety remained a critical concern throughout all phases of the project.
- TYLin held architectural concept coordination meetings with the lead agency, Miami-Dade County Department of Transportation and Public Works, and the City of Coral Gables to develop and receive approval on the details of the bridge supports and distinctive design features.
- The steel truss is clad in a series of perforated metal fins that constantly change angles to create a flowing wave form.
- The elevator towers are clad in local fossilized limestone.
- Elevators and bike-friendly stairs with a runnel allow easy access from both sides of US 1.
