I-15 Managed Lanes, North and South Segments
TYLin served as Structures Lead on several units of the North and South Segments of the I-15 Managed Lanes project in San Diego, California.
This innovative project constructed four High Occupancy Toll (HOT) lanes (express lanes) in the median of I-15 for a total length of 20 miles. A movable barrier and variable tolling provide a flexible system with the ability to adjust lane configuration and pricing to traffic conditions. The project was constructed using design sequencing for the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) District 11.
TYLin provided overall structures project management, conducted planning studies, provided type selection, and prepared high-quality Plans, Specifications, and Estimates (PS&E) packages on accelerated schedules. TYLin’s experience with design sequencing, HOT lanes, and direct access ramps (DAR) were critical to the success of the project.
Project Highlights:
- For the widening of the reversible HOT project in the City of Escondido, TYLin designed a soldier pile and tieback wall to allow construction of a DAR at the Hale Avenue Undercrossing.
- TYLin engineers designed the widening of the Hale Avenue Bridge (northbound and southbound) to accommodate a DAR and managed lanes.
- Additional designs widened both the Washington Avenue Overhead and West Mission Avenue Undercrossing to accommodate added managed lanes.
- A tie back retaining wall was designed for underneath the Pomerado Road Overcrossing.
- TYLin designed the replacement of the Carroll Canyon Road Overcrossing and soil nail retaining walls.
