Pier 26
TYLin provided structural engineering services for Pier 26 in New York, New York.
Jutting out into the Hudson River, this new public park features a lawn and a sports court with stadium-style seating. The project constructed a 15,000-square-foot elevated artificial wetland on a concrete platform set on 36 steel piles. It features two sheds, each a modern interpretation of a gazebo.
Two cantilevering walkways converge to form a platform at the pier’s west end. One of TYLin's key project goals was controlling deflections and vibrations along these paths, which rest on a pile-supported pier that is subject to river currents. A second walkway descends into the wetland to educate visitors about the local ecology.
The marine ecosystem mandated appropriate material selection and detailing to avoid corrosion. The project engineers coordinated the work of multiple trades (precast concrete, piles, steel framing, and park structures and finishes) to sequence the installation.
Project Highlights:
- Weathering steel minimizes the impact of the river environment on the structure.
- The project team overcame the challenges presented by the existing conditions.
- The project landscape architect was OLIN.
