Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project
TYLin serves as a Subject Matter Expert for the Caltrain Peninsula Corridor in San Mateo, California.
Caltrain, a commuter rail service provider on the San Francisco Peninsula, is completing its Caltrain Modernization (CalMod) Program, which includes electrifying the corridor from the 4th and King Caltrain Station to the Tamien Caltrain Station. This modernization effort will lead to faster and more frequent service while reducing air and noise pollution.
For the Peninsula Corridor Electrification Project (PCEP), part of the CalMod Program, TYLin is working with Caltrain staff as Technical Leads for office and field-based substation Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA), Overhead Catenary Systems (OCS) Traction Power Substation (TPS), and Communications Systems. Our team is delivering design and construction services related to the systems being designed and constructed by the PCEP design-build contractor.
Separate from the main design-build contract, TYLin prepared system requirements and provided procurement phase services related to the Office SCADA system. We are also providing implementation management services to oversee the design, development, testing, and commissioning of the Office SCADA systems based on the Advanced Integration Management (AIM) system supplied by Wabtec (formerly ARINC), the system integrator.
Prior to the PCEP project, TYLin was engaged by the Peninsula Corridor Joint Powers Board to oversee the design, installation, end-to-end testing, and commissioning of a new Rail Operations Control System (ROCS) for the Caltrain commuter rail operation. Throughout the project, TYLin has served as the liaison between Caltrain representatives and Rockwell Collins to ensure ROCS fully meets Caltrain’s needs and integrates seamlessly into their new control center.
Project Highlights:
- The ROCS system is in revenue service at Caltrain’s Operations Control Center and serves as the platform on which the Traction Power SCADA system is currently being built as part of PCEP project.
- TYLin provided additional functionality to support Positive Train Control, a separate Passenger Information System, and a full backup control center facility.
- Diesel-hauled trains will be replaced with electric trains to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
- Service capacity on the line will increase to six trains per peak hour per direction and trains will maintain operating speeds up to 79 mph.
