T.Y. Lin International Announces Completion of South Carolina Aeronautical Training Center for Trident Technical College
T.Y. Lin International (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that the new South Carolina Aeronautical Training Center for Trident Technical College in North Charleston, South Carolina, has been completed. TYLI provided site design and structural, mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection engineering services for the 218,105-square-foot facility. The firm also provided construction phase services and value engineering throughout the project.
Constructed on an undeveloped 62-acre site, the state-of-the-art South Carolina Aeronautical Training Center will help increase South Carolina’s ability to provide job training in the expanding aerospace and manufacturing industries. New facilities for the training center include an aircraft ramp and two hangars that include high bays large enough to accommodate a wide range of aircraft and oversized training aids. There are also 22 classrooms, 25 specialty labs, 37 offices, meeting spaces, a café, and a catering kitchen.
TYLI’s design services included master planning, architectural programming, and client workshops. Presentation of preliminary building concepts and renderings led to the selection of the prime architect for the project, LS3P Associates Ltd. Along with the building footprint, TYLI’s site design included a bridge across the wetlands area, a 1,000-foot-long causeway road with retaining walls across wetlands, a mile of 12-inch ductile iron water main, tree mitigation, and zoning approvals for tree removal, parking areas, stormwater retention, and bioswale low impact development.
TYLI’s structural engineering services included developing and analyzing all foundation, floor, and roof framing with CAT II and III displacement-based seismic design for a 143 mile-per-hour wind load. Electrical and mechanical engineering services included designing the sustainable medium voltage building electrical system, a central energy plant, including the chiller and boiler system, and the photovoltaic (PV) solar system. Fire protection engineering services included fire alarm, wet-pipe fire sprinkler, foam-water fire suppression, stairwell draft curtain sprinkler, and dry-pipe sprinkler systems.
“It has been a great honor for T.Y. Lin International to design and engineer the new South Carolina Aeronautical Training Center,” said Richard Garcia, P.E., LEED AP, TYLI Senior Vice President. “This cutting-edge facility was built in support of the aeronautical industry, currently the fastest-growing industry in the state with an annual economic impact of more than $19 billion. We are pleased to have played a role on this vitally important project for Trident Technical College and the state of South Carolina.”
In addition, TYLI assisted the prime architect by providing the design and documentation for the civil, mechanical, energy, plumbing, and electrical elements of the facility for New Construction certification from the Green Building Initiative. Along with receiving this prestigious certification, the South Carolina Aeronautical Training Center project also achieved a Two Green Globes rating. A project worthy of Two Green Globes “demonstrates excellent progress in achieving a reduction of environmental impacts and use of environmental efficiency practices.”
