T.Y. Lin International Group (TYLI), a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that the National University Hospital (NUH) Medical Centre has won two of Singapore’s most prestigious industry awards: the 2014 Singapore Institute of Architects’ Architectural Design Award and the Singapore Structural Steel Society’s Structural Steel Excellence Merit Award. TYLI’s Singapore office, T.Y. Lin International Pte. Ltd., was the Civil and Structural Consultant for the project.

“Located above an operational Singapore Mass Rapid Transit underground station and tunnels, the National University Hospital Medical Centre represented a complex and challenging project for T.Y. Lin International engineers,” said Dr. Tan Guan, TYLI Singapore’s Director of Building Structures. “This healthcare development demanded thorough project planning, review of structural options that focused on safe construction methodology, and comprehensive design coordination to ensure timely project completion.”

In order to support the strategic needs of the Singapore healthcare system, the fast-track project was delivered in just 28 months and encompasses a total gross floor area of 775,000 square feet. TYLI’s structural design of the NUH Medical Centre was developed in strict compliance with the codes of practice for constructability and railway protection in order to safeguard existing Mass Rapid Transit structures while supporting the architectural vision for the development. The design complements the building’s surroundings, blending spaciousness and a feeling of community with an emphasis on functionality and sustainability.

The newest structure for the NUH campus, and one of three buildings serving hospital patients, the NUH Medical Centre accommodates six linear accelerator bunkers, operating theaters, a diagnostic imaging facility, four floors of medical suites, facilities for Singapore’s National University Cancer Institute, dedicated space for teaching and clinical trials, and four decks of integrated parking.

TYLI’s work on the project was recognized earlier this year with a 2014 Building Construction Authority’s Engineering Safety Excellence Merit Award. Building on these award wins, the firm strives to continue bringing a wide range of building expertise and experience to present projects and future developments. TYLI is committed to the provision of value engineering, through practical design solutions for its clients and users.
