Domino Park

Silman, A TYLin Company, provided structural engineering design services for Domino Park in Brooklyn, New York.

Domino Park is an expansive waterfront park along the East River that repurposes artifacts from the Domino Sugar Refinery complex. Spanning five blocks, the park incorporates proud remnants of the Williamsburg neighborhood’s industrial past. Among the historical artifacts featured in the park are screw conveyors, a bridge hoist, a crane platform, and four 36-foot-tall cylindrical syrup tanks.

The park also features an elevated catwalk abutted on one end by two reclaimed 80-foot-tall gantry cranes that were once used to unload raw sugar. The bright painted steel of the stabilized cranes welcome visitors to the park’s north entrance.

Project Highlights:

  • The project team salvaged 425-foot-long rail tracks and structural columns from the sugar factory to create the backbone of the catwalk.
  • New cantilevered steel framing supports a precast concrete walkway.
  • The park encompasses six acres.
