TYLin designed all components related to the bridges, roads, interchanges, and landscaping for the Chongqing Expressway Project, Horizontal Line in Chongqing, China.

The Chongqing Expressway Project optimizes the local transportation network and provides significant development space for sustainable urban growth.

Carrying six lanes of traffic, the busy urban expressway is 14.3 kilometers long, with a red line width of 64 meters. The expressway has a design speed of 80 kilometers per hour and serves the transportation needs of both the surrounding urban areas and long-distance through traffic.

The Chongqing Expressway project included five horizontal, six vertical, one ring, and nine connection roads. The project also included a signature cable-stayed bridge designed by TYLin, as well as nine interchange bridges and three road tunnels.

Project Highlights:

  • The expressway was designed to go around the city center rather than to through, due to the layout of the city, land usage planning policy, and extensive needs of Chongqing’s motorized population.
  • The transportation hub facilitates the transition of traffic modes and was established in accordance with the principles of "traffic volume orientation, positive guidance, and efficient connection."
  • An environmental impact analysis was used to identify potential construction issues and minimize impacts on local communities.
  • TYLin’s environmental impact analysis led to a series of curved alignments to protect established trees and local historical areas.
