T.Y. Lin International Group, a globally recognized full-service infrastructure consulting firm, announces that its Singapore operations, T.Y. Lin International Pte. Ltd., has been honored with two 2013 Design and Engineering Safety Excellence Awards from the Building and Construction Authority (BCA) of Singapore. The awards, which are for the design of the National University of Singapore (NUS) Link Bridge and Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital, were presented to Er Yong Fen Leong, principal of T.Y. Lin International Pte. Ltd., and Er Dr. Tan Guan, senior principal of T.Y. Lin International Pte. Ltd., by BCA guest of honor, Lee Yi Shyan, Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry and National Development of Singapore.
The NUS Link Bridge, which connects the Kent Ridge campus to the new University Town campus, spans ten busy traffic lanes of the Ayer Rajah Expressway (AYE). The 274-meter bridge was designed with an S-shaped alignment to minimize impact on existing buildings and services. Despite site constraints, there was minimal impact on traffic and public safety as the 100-meter main span of bridge over the AYE was constructed. Precast segmental cantilever launching technology was used for the main span, with bridge segments cast offsite and transported for assembly onsite during off-peak hours. This efficient process enhanced construction safety and eliminated the need for temporary structures and road closures during the day.
Precise bridge analyses with multi-stage pre-stressing were also carried out to study bridge behavior at all stages of construction, including the permanent stage, in order to ensure structural adequacy, project safety, and accurate construction of its S-shaped curvature.
The Mount Elizabeth Novena Hospital project received an award for the adoption of highly efficient engineering approaches to meet architectural and functional requirements, while enhancing productivity, site safety and quality. The undulating site terrain and geological contours posed challenges to the foundation and basement designs of the hospital. Extensive geotechnical investigation was conducted to map out rock contours, and a top-down method of construction was adopted to deliver the project within the 24-month contract period, with no compromise in quality or safety.
The fast track hospital project required special design and engineering safety considerations, including structural stiffness and radiation shielding for sensitive medical equipment, and building robustness against disproportionate collapse, which involved working closely with acoustic and security consultants. The modular designs adopted for this project ensured the ease of construction and flexibility in layout changes.
Both projects were successfully completed in a relatively short time, enabled by the adoption of innovative design solutions in order to facilitate on-time construction and to overcome site challenges.
