Pier 57

Pier 57 is a 633,000-square-foot shipping terminal and cargo storage facility on the Hudson River near Manhattan’s Meatpacking District. It was designed by architect and civil engineer Emil Praeger and opened in 1954. After the decline of maritime-related industries, the pier was also used as a bus depot for the NYC Transit Authority.

TYLin provided structural engineering services for a large-scale redevelopment that transformed the historic 900-foot-long building. The open component of the development consists of a rooftop park with lawns, bleacher seating, an outdoor cinema, and waterfront promenades.

Major building tenants are the James Beard Foundation, opening a new 16,000 sf food hall; City Winery, whose 32,000 sf includes a performance venue and a flagship restaurant; TriBeCa Enterprises, who will use the 80,000 sf rooftop park for film festival screenings; and Google, who is leasing 350,000 sf of commercial office space.
