Pine Valley North Sewage Pumping Station and Pedestrian Utility Bridges

TYLin provided engineering services for a sewage pumping station (SPS), forcemain, gravity sewers, watermains, and two pedestrian/utility bridges to service a proposed development in Vaughan, Ontario, Canada.

The scope of work included design and construction administration services of the SPS and ancillary services, a 400-milimetre, 1,500-metre-long sanitary forcemain and two pedestrian/utility bridges (200-metre and 230-metre spans) across Purpleville Creek. Suspended underneath the bridges are 300-milimetre and 400-milimetre watermains and 450-milimetre sewer lines.  

The project also included construction of access roads to the bridges and hydraulic review of sewer capacity to accommodate station flows. 

TYLin led a Value Engineering session to consider construction of multiple pumping stations and various design enhancements. Due to site limitations, the selected option was the construction of an SPS that was shallower than the original design, with the two pedestrian bridges across the valley.  

The work supports the proposed Block 40/47 development, which is 234 hectares (578 acres) of single and semi-detached houses, townhouses, commercial development, stormwater management, parks, an elementary school, institutional uses, a greenway system, and an urban area. 

Project Highlights: 

  • TYLin’s value engineering solution met all stakeholder requirements and achieved a cost savings of approximately CAD 10 million. 
  • The SPS is the largest of its kind in the City of Vaughan, with a capacity of 251L/s.  
  • The SPS includes a two-hour emergency storage tank that is equipped with standby power and an odour control system.  
  • Construction was in sensitive valley lands and required close coordination with Toronto and Region Conservation Authority (TRCA) and the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF). 
  • The project was completed by The Municipal Infrastructure Group Ltd (TMIG), now doing business as TYLin.
